People: Billy Bob Thornton's "insecurity" led to split with Angelina Jolie
Billy Bob Thornton says his marriage to AngelinaJoliefell apart because of his insecurity.
I blew it because I didn't think I was good enough for her, he told Nightline Tuesday night. She has one way she wanted to live her life and I had another way to live mine and I was just too insecure.
The couple, whomet in 1999 while co-starring in Pushing Tin, were wed in 2000 but split a mere three years later.
While both had won Oscars, Thornton's career outshone Jolie's at the time.
But that all changed when the Girl, Interrupted
actress, now 36, took on 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.Thornton says the fame and pressure was just too much.
When you're in a relationship, any two celebrities or whatever, you know, I think that puts on a lot of pressure, he said in the interview. When Angie and I got married, during that time, I was more famous than she was to start with and then when she becomes this big thing, it's hard in these relationships.
Thornton said he and Jolie, recently engaged to Brad Pitt, are still good friends.
We had a great marriage and I chickened out because I didn't feel good enough, he said. That's all that happened. It was no big deal, we never hated each other.
Jolie even wrote the f! oreword to his new book, The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts.
In it she says her former husband has a big beautiful heart, he has an unmatchable wit and can make you laugh until your face hurts Life & Style, which attained a copy, reports.
Jolie writes on, To be with him is like being with a mad mathematician, she adds. He is constantly counting and repeating.
Some people walk through life able to quiet the voices in their heads. He can't. And I, and everyone else who knows him well, we love him for it, she says, ending with, I know one thing: The world would certainly be a hell of a lot more dull if that man weren't in it.
John Mayer says he lost my head for little while, in recalling his over-the-top interviews about his ex-girlfriends in 2010, which got him plenty of media coverage.
And then he decided to go underground.
I lost my head for a little while. I lost touch and I didn't want to ask for directions,
Mayer, 34, told Ellen DeGeneres in an interview to be aired Tuesday. I did a couple really dumb interviews and it woke me up.Among the more memorable quotes from him: Of Jessica Simpson, he said, "That girl, for me, is a drug ... Yeah, that girl is like crack cocaine to me... Sexually it was crazy. That's all I'll say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm."
In regards to Jennifer Aniston, Mayer said, "I'll always be sorry that it didn't last. In some ways I wish I could be with her."
He called it a very strange time, and he says his decision to cool it for the two past years helped with rocketing him into adulthood.
I'm glad I actua! lly stay ed out of the spotlight, he said. Back then I would've said, Let me get out and do Ellen and explain myself.' It was like, No, idiot. Go away be 33 and 34 instead of 28 for the fourth year.'
Mayer says he made the best of his time out of the public eye, during which he wrote and recorded Born and Raised, out May 22.
But after the granuloma in his throat returned he has had to cancel a planned tour and will undergo surger again this fall.
It's not a health concern whatsoever but it has taken me out of singing, he explains. Tried to beat it the first time and couldn't. They cut this thing out, then they inject your vocal cords with
Botox, which freezes [them] so [they] can heal without smacking up against the other side. I just need more Botox next time.In the meantime, Mayer has moved to the Bozeman, Mont., area and begun work on his next album.
I can't sing, so I'm writing, he tells DeGeneres. I live in Montana middle of nowhere. It's really excellent. You get to a certain age where you prepare yourself for happiness. Sometimes you never remember to actually get happy. I remembered to get happy.
