Angelina Jolie makes secret visit to Libya - See photos

Angelina Jolie might still be considering her United Nations promotion, but the actress is keeping up her duties with a two-day trip to Libya on Tuesday.

"I have come to Libya for a variety of reasons, to see a country in transition at every level," Jolie said in a statement to Reuters. "The country faces a host ! of chall enges, including internally displaced people, refugees, rule of law, security, sanitation, education, health and other humanitarian needs. All of these pieces must be delivered and coordinated properly in an environment of reconciliation and justice."

The 36-year-old actress and humanitarian, who currently serves as an ambassador for the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR, met representatives from UNHCR, Medecins Sans Frontieres and local non-governmental organizations delivering assistance to Libyans in Misrata and Tripoli.

"I will be meeting with officials from all sides but above all, listening to the local people in the street," Jolie continued. "I am here to express solidarity with them. It is the work of rebuilding and recovery that will determine Libya's future."

Earlier in the week, it was announced that Jolie was considering a move from her current position as a UNHCR goodwill ambassador to a more expanded role that she and the agency are still discussing, according to the Associated Press.

The actress has donated $5 million to the Geneva-based organization over the past decade and has visited dozens of countries to promote the cause of refugees.

"We are looking at a few countries in the world," Jolie told the news wire. "We're hoping to discuss it in the next few weeks, but we want to research it properly."

Jolie has been a UNHCR goodwill ambassador since 2001. Since then, she has made humanitarian trips to many countries, including Pakistan last year.

Jolie told diplomats Tuesday that her work for them has been "moving, sometimes heartbreaking, but always rewarding, and unforgettable."

The mother of six ha! s been i n the news recently for her high-profile relationship with actor Brad Pitt, and the speculation that the two will soon wed. The couple has six children together and have been dating for at least five years.

In May, Pitt said that his children, whose ages range from 2 to 9, "ask about marriage." He continued, "It's meaning more and more to them. So it's something we've got to look at."

Jolie and Pitt have donated $340,000 to the Somali aid group Humanitarian Initiative Just Relief Aid and donated $2 million to a wildlife sanctuary in Namibia. The couple's 5-year-old daughter Shiloh, their first biological child, was born in the African country.
