Angelina Jolie will star as Maleficent, the evil queen of Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty, in a live-action update of the 1959 animated-feature version, this time told from the perspective of the original mean girl. It is set to be released March 14, 2014, it was announced Monday.
"It's not anti-princess," Jolie told Entertainment Weekly about the film, Maleficent. "But it's the first time they're looking at this epic woman ... I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn't mean she can't have other [warmer] qualities."
She added, "It's a really great script. I'm having a lot of fun. I've already got my horns fitted. My kids are very happy."
Robert Stromberg, the Oscar-winning production designer behind James Cameron's Avatar and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, is making his directorial debut on the movie, which is being produced by Joe Roth.
Just for the record, in the original, Maleficent turns herself into a dragon and gets slain by Prince Phillip, before he rushes in to save Princess Aurora.
